Our hearing is so fine-tuned. If you have an "analog" clock face (meaning, not digital), try to hear the click of the second hand. It is only when you have complete silence and when you have your ear in just the right position that you can hear the ticking.
It's the same way with God. We have to be in just the right position to be able to hear from His Holy Spirit.
